“All coaching is, is taking a player where he can’t take himself.”
– Bill McCartney, American Football Coach
When I pursued coaching as a career and passion, I didn’t know how much I would have to explain to folks what coaching is. Anytime I mention being a coach, I would always get the follow-up question, “Of what sport?” And then I would have to say, “Uhh…not that kind of coach.” And then the person would say, “Oh ok, then what kind of coach are you talking about?” Unfortunately, a vast majority of us only know of the kind of coaching involving athletes and maybe singers or actors. Those who do know about the other coaching, do so via executive and/or life coaching; an experience typically available to those who can afford it. However, I am on a mission to bring the other kind of coaching to everyone, regardless of socio-economic status. I want everyone to know about this wonderful tool capable of helping us become better versions of ourselves and achieving goals beyond our imagination. It starts, however, with understanding what the other version of coaching is.
To start, the kind of coaching I speak of is where, according to the International Coach Federation (ICF), you partner with a coach in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires you to maximize your personal and professional potential. Now I admit, the non-athletic coaching explanation is a bit broad and borderline nebulous. What does it even mean? That is why I prefer to explain what coaching does rather than what it is. And one of the things coaching can do is help you go places you weren’t able to go before, for one reason or another. A coach is trained to engage with you in a way that helps you get out of your own head and in some cases, out of your own way; so, you can move forward better, consistently, and successfully.
And how do they do that? Well, that’s what Coaching…for a Change will explain, and more. My intent is to introduce, explain, and promote coaching as an effective tool for personal and professional change, transformation, and goal achievement. I believe in this tool wholeheartedly and want nothing more than to share it with you, in hopes that it will inspire you to try coaching…for a change.
